No injuries after Antarctica research station support plane crashes

Tuesday, December 25, 2007

A Basler BT-67, chartered from Canadian air carrier Kenn Borek Air for the National Science Foundation (NSF), a United States government agency, has crashed whilst attempting take-off during a support assignment in Antarctica. None of the ten people on board were injured, but the modified Douglas DC-3 was substantially damaged in the accident.

The accident occurred on the morning of December 20 local time, about 550 miles from McMurdo Station, a US-run Antarctic base. The aircraft was carrying a crew of four, and six researchers. The flight was part of the Polar Earth Observatory Network project, which is part-funded by the NSF. The project sets up GPS equipment and seismic sensors in various locations across Antarctica, in order to monitor changes in the ice sheets that cover the continent. It is thought that this will aid understanding of global warming.

Although the NSF refused to publicise any details of the crash, one anonymous passenger has come forward about the accident, releasing his account in the form of an online report. According to the passenger, one side of the plane failed to lift off, and the aircraft’s wing subsequently dug into the ice.

“My seat came unbolted from the floor with me still strapped into the seatbelt,” the passenger said. “When we finally came to a halt, we were all in big pile in the corner of the plane with all of the equipment. We got shaken up pretty bad, but there were no major injuries other than some minor cuts and bruises… The wings, props, and tail all got bent up pretty bad. The landing gear, skis, and hydraulic system all were ripped from the plane and strewn about the ice.”

Following the accident, all those on board spent about twenty hours before they were flown back to McMurdo Station on board two Twin Otter aircraft sent from the base on a rescue mission. A full investigation has been launched into the crash by the Department of the Interior‘s Aircraft Management Division (AMD), who have signed a memorandum of agreement with NSF to conduct any necessary investigations on their behalf. The AMD have subsequently contacted the United States National Transportation Safety Board, who will participate in conjunction with the Transportation Safety Board of Canada.

The Wii, Nintendo’s next generation console, launches in North America

Sunday, November 19, 2006

Nintendo has released its newest video game console in North America. Known as the Wii, the system and games have an MSRP of US$249.99 and US$49.99 respectively. The North American release is to be followed by the December 2nd launch in Japan and the December 8th launch in Europe.

Launched officially at midnight, more than a thousand people gathered in New York’s Time Square to be among the first to buy one of the Wii. In contrast to the crowds that have challenged crowd control officials over the last two days in connection with the launch of Sony’s Playstation 3, the Wii crowds have been much calmer. Many observers attribute this to the fact that Nintendo had more than ten times as many Wii consoles available on launching day than Sony did for their PS3 that had been hounded by part shortages in manufacturing right up to the day of launch.

Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime said that several tough choices had been made in the design of the Wii. The company decided to develop a new way of playing games with revolutionary controllers instead of following the PS3 and the Xbox down the road of stunning graphic and multimedia options. This produced a console with a much talked-about sensor/controller design and the lowest price point of the three major consoles. While not having a DVD player or high-definition TV capabilities, the Wii retails for about $250 while its competitors the Xbox 360 and PS3 retail for about $400 and $600 respectively.

While the Wii will launch with several games available, one of its advertised advantages is that the new console is largely compatible with older games made for the GameCube, giving the new console an instant and extensive launching library. A GameCube controller will be needed to play GameCube games with the Wii. Several hardware items that GameCube games may be expecting, such as the modem or broadband adapter or the GameBoy player are not supported on the Wii.

Across the country in Los Angeles about 500 people were waiting for the doors to open at Universal City Walk’s Game Stop store. Fearing that the Wii introduction might be as contentious as the PS3 debut just a few days ago, the store handed out numbered wristbands to the throng. No problems were reported.

Water Pumps are Quite Useful

Water pumps help to transport and distribute water. The applications of these devices will be described in this article.

The questions that children have are funny, but at times quite frightening. As the parent of an 8, 7, 6, 4, and 2 year old, answering questions are just a part of my daily routine. However, last week, my 4 year old took asking questions to a whole new level. I would have never in a million years thought that a child that is so young would be interested in how water pumps work.

A water well is a structure in the ground that is formed by digging of drilling. Digging allows access to ground water that is stored in aquifers. Well water contains more minerals than surface water. Unfortunately, the chemicals that are used to soften the water used in a lot of residences, removes many of the minerals that are in well water. Along with removing the minerals, the taste of the water is also changed.

According to my mother, the conversation started when my 4 year old daughter was trying to get her to explain why our kitchen faucet does not have the equipment that my parents have on their kitchen sink at home. Since my parents own a water purification system that is more aged than the one that we have, it is a little confusing to the little ones.

My mother started out by telling my daughter that the handle on her faucet is bigger because the water system that she owns is older than the one that is at her house. My daughter still did not understand what the age of a thing had to do with the way that it looked if the same purpose was served.

In the test tube, the agents were taught to collect a sample of water from the residence in which they were doing the presentation. With no hesitation, most home owners agreed. After collecting the water sample, the agent used a dye solution to test the water.

It is amazing that a conversation beginning as a question concerning the description of a product turned into a debate on why water needs to be purified. My son did not understand why water had to have a system in order for it to produce water. He understood that water comes from the earth, but just how it is possible is something that he could not quite grasp.

When families are fortunate enough to use well water, unfortunately, the responsibility lies on that family to pay for the upkeep and maintenance of the system. From my understanding, it takes years for something to go wrong with the water pump, but when the problem occurs, it is a disaster. Repairs are very costly as well.

Having to choose between healthier well water and a public water pump system is really not a difficult choice. HoweverArticle Submission, that decision is not normally left up to the customer. This decision is normally dependent upon the location of the residence. Having to use water that is stripped of nutrients is unfortunate. Having to pay for water that can be free is another problem that we can’t change. The only thing that can be done is to deal with the situation and try to remain as healthy as possible.

How To Choose A Right Composition Of Website?

If you want your business go online, you need to know of some basic structures for an ideal website. There are largely three structures required for building an effective website. The structures are linear, tiered and webbed. On seeing their usefulness, you have to decide which one can fulfill your requirements. The general tendency among visitors is to go online and start searching for the target information. So, keeping this in mind, you have to organize designs and contents for your website in such a way that could keep those visitors glued to your site. Contents play a vital role in helping you shape your website design. You have to be scrupulous about how you intend for that content to be shared. Given such compulsions, you have to selectively choose the structure which will be the best one for your website.

For the purpose of getting a custom website design, the structures we have been talking about need to be known in detail. Let us discuss them.

Visit website design png for more information specifically

About Linear:

A linear website is a website that has prompt from one web page to another web page, so that a linear and logical progression of information is maintained. The application of Fork will be a good choice.

Sometimes, web designers are told that all the merchandises of a business are to be thronged in a single page. That what leads such a web page looks like a harangue. You need to know that visitors may hit upon your web page for getting some information in the first place, but at the same time if they look devoid of creative design it will lose essence. And eventually, the purpose of selling products and or services will not be met. So, while designing a sales web page, make sure that you have created a linear website focused on selling those products and or services. Again, if your intension is to create an instructional website that will be teaching your visitors step by step method to perform something, then make sure that you have enquired of your web design service provider to go for a linear website. For example, a website that tells news, a story, or a narrative will be best sought-after if it has got linear website structure. The most brilliant advantage of linear web structure is that it gives flexibility for website design changes later.

About Tiered:

Entrepreneurs should know that tiered websites are those websites that have different topics and various subtopics within a general subject. In general, a tiered website should have minimum 2 tiers, but that could be smaller one. The general practice that most of the websites follow in this case is to incorporate 3 tiers. Suppose you have 40 topics and each topic has 20 subtopics, then the website will consist of 402 web pages.

Planning a 3 tiered website is very easy like drawing a diagram matches with drawing an organization chart. If you have many topics and a lot of subtopics, then this structure will greatly benefit you in designing your website.

About Webbed:

Among the three basic website types, the webbed structure can be a bit complex, though most of the successful websites use this one. If you plan for a membership site, information-based site, a site full of catalogues; then you must choose this web designing solution. You will greatly be benefitted out of it!

San Francisco mother of 12-year-old boy who was mauled to death charged with child endangerment

Sunday, June 26, 2005

Maureen Faibish of 711 Lincoln Way San Francisco, CA was arrested on June 24, 2005 on the charge of child endangerment in the actions leading up to the death of her son, 12-year-old Nicholas Faibish, who was mauled by one or both of her two pit bull dogs, Rex 2 and Ella.

Nicholas was discovered dead in the front bedroom of her home at approximately 15:15 PDT on June 3, 2005, by his mother, who had left the house to run some errands. She had locked her son in the basement to keep him away from the dogs. “I put him down there, with a shovel on the door.”, Faibish said in a telephone interview to the San Francisco Chronicle. “He had a bunch of food. And I told him, ‘Stay down there until I come back.’ Typical Nicky, he wouldn’t listen to me.”

Faibish stated that she believes that her son had walked in when Rex 2, a male pit bull, was attempting to mate with Ella, a female pit bull who was in heat at the time. She stated that Rex 2 had been acting possessively prior to the incident. A police officer shot and killed Ella in order to gain entry to the apartment. Rex 2 was captured and removed to an animal shelter. “The police killed the wrong dog if you ask me.”, Faibish said.
