The Cheapest Places to Stay on Your Family Vacation

Family Travel Enthusist

When deciding where to stay on your family vacation, chain hotels and motels are almost never the most economical or convenient lodging choice for a big family. By using a little digging and research, nearly every destination offers better alternatives.

Rent a house: There’s no need to cram into a single room as you can rent a complete house. In tourist towns it’s often easy to find fully-furnished rentals. You have multiple bedrooms under one roof, plus a kitchen for cooking breakfast or light meals. It’s so much cheaper than several standard hotel rooms and eating in resort restaurants. Search Google for vacation rentals, or vacation rentals by owner for the destination you might be considering. Craig’s List also has ads for vacation rentals by area. Home Exchange: When thinking of where to stay on your family vacation, if youve never considered a Home Exchange Vacation, the thought is usually a little daunting. After all you are letting a family you are unsure of live in your home while you stay in theirs. However, when you consider the advantages, you just may very well be tempted to try it at least once. Understand that your potential exchange partner will probably have the same concerns as you do. Having someone at your residence at the same time you are in theirs gives each of you an excellent incentive to treat the property entrusted to you personally with respect and care. Many of the benefits of a home exchange family vacation include: 1. Obviously the price of remaining in someones home tend to be less than staying in hotel accommodations and they are also a whole lot more casual and relaxing. 2. An exchange is arranged between families with children of similar ages. Therefore you will find it unnecessary to travel with a great deal of baggage, (especially if you children are infants and toddlers) 3. Oftentimes you are also able to exchange cars which will save on rental-car fees (consult the insurance companies first) 4. If your children are older, once the exchange is finalized, you may find them emailing and IMing each other. By the time family vacation rolls around, they will often have already made friends with all the other neighborhood kids on Facebook or other social media sites. 5. Home exchanges are interesting because you can slip right into the area lifestyle and see glimpses of how people live, the top local places to eat, get invited to local events that you would never get to see or do as a tourist. 6. If there are pets involved, arrangements may be made for pet care and this can eliminate expensive kennel costs. You can obtain more info about home exchanges at: Home Exchange.com Rent a Time Share: You don’t need to own a timeshare to enjoy some great benefits of time share ownership. Many timeshare owners rent out their weeks for a fraction of what it would cost you to remain in a hotel. Look into Craig’s List for available timeshares in the area you intend to see. For other time shares that may be available for you to stay on family vacations check out Redweek.com One Final Caveat: Take into account that when traveling with a big family things will almost certainly go wrong and the unexpected usually happens. An open mind, a flexible outlook, and a great sense of humor might help keep youand your familyhappy and sane. To reduce frustration for everyone, plan a vacation that’s light on itinerary and planned excursions and full of relaxation and laid-back discovery. Never underestimate the time you spend with your children. Perhaps you may feel exhausted and frustrated some days while traveling and wonder what on the face of God’s green earth possessed you to set about this journey. However, in years into the future, you will be surprised at just how much your children remember of those trips as well as remembrances they have stored about them.

As a mother of six children and having 9 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild, Gloria Daniels has done my her share of traveling with children. Now that she is retired, she is combining her love of sharing and teaching with her love of travel to help other families find the joy of traveling with their children and sharing experiences with them.

National Parties

In the lead-up to the 2008 Canadian federal elections much speculation was made about environmental issues and initiative, with various parties maneuvering to claim some portion of the green mantle. But it was the Liberal party which first brought a full-blown policy to the public.

In the months since the Green Shift initiative was brought forth, the political pundits and activists have both talked about this year as the first election where the environment would be a major issue on the minds of voters, and possibly a decisive one for the electorate.

It’s indeed true the environment ranks very high in minds of voters across the country, particularly among young voters. One national survey of Canadians between 18 and 25 finds the environment is the top issue. A poll of all voters found it to be the third most important single issue over all, behind the economy and health care, but the poll suggested that no one issue has really caught the attention of the electorate with many issues gaining similar attention.

The parties themselves seem indecisive, trying to claim a focus on environmental issues but rarely making specific proposals or promises, with the notable exception of the Liberals whose platform has been targeted by opponents and commentators as “wildly experimental” and “doesn’t go deep enough” by turns.

Examining the platforms of the New Democratic Party regarding air pollution and global warming as available on their website, one is struck by a lack of substance. Reference is made to C-377, the Climate Change Accountability Act, which the NDP calls “Layton’s Kyoto-Plus Bill”, which was passed in 2006. The party believes Canada can achieve its Kyoto requirements by 2012, though no mention is made of how a Layton government would do so.

In June of 2008 the Liberals tabled a plan, the Green Shift, which they claim would reduce Canada’s greenhouse gas emissions 20% under 1990 emissions – well below the 6% required by Canadian law when Canada ratified the Kyoto Accord – by 2020, which is rather after the 2008-2012 phase-in period required by that same law. The method of performing this reduction would be to shift the Canadian tax system, reducing income and revenue taxes by replacing them with taxes on greenhouse gas emissions. The plan generated considerable discussion and opposition, and the party has back-pedaled in some portions and added on in others, as well as announcing a couple of separate initiatives to soften the effects for farmers, homeowners, and fishermen among others.

A more diverse approach than solely a “Carbon Tax” is proposed in the Green Party’s platform, which presents an almost holistic approach of adherence to the Kyoto obligations, “Cap and trade” of carbon emissions, industry development with both green technology R&D and regulation as well as consumer subsidies, and their own version of a carbon tax. Alone of the parties they specifically mention the role of international diplomacy/trade as a part of their approach.

Such an approach appears to be anathema to the Conservatives, whose mantra since their election has been that Kyoto cannot be complied with without forcing an economic recession on the country, and used the Throne Speech of 2007 to reiterate that position. They have opposed cap-and-trade schemes in the past, but their platform for this election states their plan to reduce greenhouse gas emissions includes emissions caps for “four air pollutants commonly associated with smog and acid rain,” as well as “tough emission reduction targets”.

In contrast to the laundry-list of unconnected initiatives on the Conservative’s website, the clean platform pamphlet created by the Bloc Québécois makes a simple and apparently heartfelt statement on the environment:

La lutte aux changements climatiques est devenue un enjeu fondamental pour l’humanité et le Québec est déterminé à apporter sa contribution, à sa façon. À Ottawa, c’est le Bloc Québécois qui mène la lutte en faveur de l’application du protocole de Kyoto dans le respect des choix du Québec.
Tackling climate change has become a fundamental issue for all of humanity and Québec is determined to make its contribution, in its own way. In Ottawa, the Bloc Québécois, respecting Québec’s choices, is leading the fight to enforce the Kyoto Protocol.

Just how they plan to enforce the Kyoto obligations is not stated, though they do discuss a carbon market, and tax incentives for home heating upgrade and transportation.

There seems to be a wide if somewhat shallow interest in the electorate as to just what each party is offering on the environmental file. But with sketchy platforms regarding environmental issues, it’s no wonder some of the parties have turned to the subject of economics in recent days.

Scientists say excess cerebrospinal fluid may serve as early sign of autism

Thursday, March 9, 2017

In a study that appeared on Monday in Biological Psychiatry, scientists from the Universities of California and North Carolina, with several other universities in the United States and Canada, report a strong correlation between abnormal distribution of cerebrospinal fluid in infants and later development of autistic symptoms.

“The more extra-axial CSF present at six months, the more severe the autism symptoms when the kids were diagnosed at 24 months of age,” said first author Dr. Mark Shen, a postdoctoral fellow at the University of North Carolina.

The study covered 343 children examined aged six months, twelve months, and twenty-four months, 221 of whom had older siblings with autism. Children with higher than usual volumes of cerebrospinal fluid in the subarachnoid space — the area just around the brain — were more likely to be diagnosed with autism later in life, with a strong correlation in the high-risk group. Ultimately, cerebrospinal volume was able to provide an early diagnosis of probably ASD in high-risk children with 70% accuracy. The six-month-old babies who later went on to a diagnosis of autism had an average of 18% more CSF by volume than those who were not so diagnosed. This built on the findings of a 2013 study that covered only 55 children.

Researchers said it is not clear whether a large amount of cerebrospinal fluid actually causes autism or not. While studies have shown that cerebrospinal fluid, once thought to act solely as a cushioner and shock absorber for the brain, can influence the way neurons grow, Shen speculated that the large amount of fluid may itself be a symptom: “We believe that extra-axial CSF is an early sign that CSF is not filtering and draining when it should. The result is that there could be a buildup of neuro-inflammation that isn’t being washed [a]way.”

Currently, coauthor David Amaral said, children are not diagnosed with autism spectrum disorders until they are old enough for their behavior to change, usually at two or three years old. Researchers said these findings could be used to develop an early diagnostic system usable when the patient is as young as six months old.

Brazilian shot by police on London Underground was not acting suspiciously

Tuesday, August 16, 2005

Documents, reportedly leaked from the investigation into the death of Jean Charles de Menezes, the Brazilian electrician shot dead by British Police on the London Underground on 22 July reveal that Mr de Menezes was not acting suspiciously and was already restrained when shot.

Furthermore, the documents reveal that the original report given by the police and recorded on the coroners report contained many false statements. The reports suggest the police shot Jean Charles de Menezes because they mistakenly identified him as Hussain Osman, and had agreed to shoot him if he ran. Hussain Osman was suspected of having placed a faulty or mock explosive in a train.

The original reports claimed that de Menezes was acting suspiciously, was wearing a padded jacket, and ran when challenged, even vaulting the ticket barriers. However, the leaked documents, which include statements from officers involved in the operation and photographs of the scene, show that he behaved like any other commuter, used his travel pass to enter the station, even picking up a newspaper on his way. He was not challenged by police, and appears to have been unaware of being followed until after he entered the train. Photographic stills show he was only wearing a light denim jacket. It appears that he only ran in order to reach a train that was about to leave the platform.

The leaked document describes CCTV footage, which shows Mr de Menezes entered Stockwell station at a “normal walking pace” and descended slowly on an escalator.

The document said: “At some point near the bottom he is seen to run across the concourse and enter the carriage before sitting in an available seat.”

An eye witness, who was sitting opposite de Menezes on the train, is quoted as saying: “Within a few seconds I saw a man coming into the double doors to my left. He was pointing a small black handgun towards a person sitting opposite me. He pointed the gun at the right hand side of the man’s head. The gun was within 12 inches of the man’s head when the first shot was fired.”

This report is considerably different to initial reports that claimed de Menezes tripped as he fled onto the train, before being restrained by pursuing officers and shot. Photographs leaked to ITN appear to corroborate this new witness’s report as they clearly show blood on the seat in which de Menezes is said to have been sitting.

Other statements suggest that the Brazilian was seated before being pinned down by a plain-clothed police officer. Plainclothed armed officers had entered the carriage at this point. Several shots were then fired and de Menezes was hit seven times in the head and once in the shoulder. Three further shots missed Mr Menezes.

A community officer’s report (one of the leaked documents) confirms that Mr. de Menezes was seated and restrained at the time of being shot:

“I heard shouting which included the word ‘police’ and turned to face the male in the denim jacket.

“He immediately stood up and advanced towards me and the CO19 [the armed unit] officers …I grabbed the male in the denim jacket by wrapping both my arms around his torso, pinning his arms to his side.

“I then pushed him back onto the seat where he had been previously sitting … I then heard a gun shot very close to my left ear and was dragged away onto the floor of the carriage.”

The leaked documents confirm that Police had been given permission to shoot if a suspect was non-compliant, having been told that “unusual tactics” may be required and if they “were deployed to intercept a subject and there was an opportunity to challenge, but if the subject was non compliant, a critical shot may be taken.” It is thought that when he ran for the train officers felt this was suitable evidence of “non-compliance”.

The Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) said its priority was to keep Mr de Menezes family informed and refused to comment on the details of the leak.

The commission said the family “will clearly be distressed that they have received information on television concerning his death”.

In an interview with the Guardian Newspaper, Asad Rehman, spokesman for the family’s campaign, called for a public inquiry. “This was not an accident,” he said. “It was serious neglect. Clearly, there was a failure both in police intelligence and on an operational level.”

Harriet Wistrich, the family’s solicitor expressed concerns, during an interview with ITN, that the Police had withheld information from the investigation for a longer period than was permitted under UK law. Ms. Wistrich also claimed, in a separate interview with the BBC, that the documents suggest that the original information given to the pathologist who carried out the post-mortem examination on Mr de Menezes was incorrect and that the information the leaked documents contained was “shocking and terrifying”.

“What sort of society are we living in where we can execute suspects?” she asked in the BBC interview.

An unnamed senior police source told the Guardian that the leaked documents and statements give an accurate picture of what was known so far about the shooting. Former Flying Squad commander John O’Connor told the BBC “had the normal procedures taken place in which a warning is given and officers wear specially marked clothing then this young man may not have been killed.”

The IPCC statement added: “The IPCC made it clear that we would not speculate or release partial information about the investigation, and that others should not do so. That remains the case.”

Mark Oaten, Home Affairs Spokesman for the Liberal Democrats, said: “If true, these preliminary findings will create obvious concerns. It is in the best interests of the police and the community for the full report and any recommendations, to be published as quickly as possible.”

Manitoba volunteers go to war against Red River flooding

Monday, April 6, 2009

Over 1,600 volunteers registered to help build approximately 65,000 of the 500,000 sandbags to create dikes 20.5 feet (6.2 meters) high to protect the City of Winnipeg, Manitoba in the war against the Red River of the North flood.

700 volunteers answered at the rural municipality of St. Andrews alone. Once sandbags are filled for West St. Paul, St. Andrews, and Selkirk, then frozen culverts must be cleared.

The height of the river is expected to be Thursday, and predictions are that it will be less than Flood of the Century of 1997. There is no precipitation in the forecast, and snow in the province should be melted by the end of the week.

“The fear right now is we have to get that ice out of the river. The Amphibex [Excavators] are still working and breaking the ice apart, and everyday we buy with the warm weather and the current, it is thinning the ice down a bit, so when it does start to move, the better chance it’ll move right out into the lake,” said Paul Guyder, the emergency coordinator for the RMs of St. Andrews and St. Clements.

“I feel that we’ve done everything humanly possible to get ready,” said Gary Doer, Premier of Manitoba, “But … there are fallibilities with human behaviour. We can take every preventative measure as human beings possible and we can still get Mother Nature proving again she is superior.”

Communities with ring diking will partially or fully close their dikes at the beginning of the week. Provincial officials are considering opening the Red River Floodway gates around mid-week before ice is fully melted.

Ice jams could cause flooding within the city, however opening the gates could spare neighbourhood flooding when the river rises to the estimated 6.3 meters (20.7 feet) height. The province does have back up plans for dealing with ice jams within the city if they do occur. The unpredictability of ice jams and the ensuing water level rise may cause neighbourhood flooding. The city is raising dikes where the river has jammed with ice in the past such as on tight curves and past bridges. Likewise there are excavators and backhoes positioned at these points.

Vulnerable neighbourhoods on the river banks have been reinforced with sandbag dikes at vulnerable areas from the massive volunteer effort over the weekend. Guyader feels no more extra volunteers are needed, however volunteers are still being asked to leave their names and number in case of unpredicted need. Existing personnel will assess roads, and help with clean up.

Approximately 400 of the 800 people who evacuated the Roseau River Anishinabe First Nation have returned to their homes.

Former Premier, Dufferin Roblin, brought forward the floodway as a protection for Winnipeg residents and economy following the 1950 Red River Flood. The Red River floodway, “Duff’s Ditch” was finally finished in 1968, and its floodway gates have been opened 20 times saving Winnipeg from an estimated CA$10 billion in damages. The floodway expansion began in 2005 at a price of $665 million.

Polish and Chinese experts have come to survey the Red River Floodway, and Dennis Walaker, mayor of Fargo, North Dakota recognises the need for Red River flood defences down river. “Every town that you drive by from the Canadian line up to Winnipeg is either elevated or ring-diked,” said Walaker.

Five Different Suggestions To Consider When Shopping For Kid’s Night Lights

Submitted by: Martha Caldwell

Are you presently sick of getting up in the middle of the night to a moping kid who is crying purely because they believe the bogeyman is without question under their bed or they believe that one of their stuffed toys has changed into a creature? Clearly the easy solution to get rid of this issue is to buy a night light. It will not only help your children sleep considerably better, but it will even ensure that you have an adequate amount of lighting to come in and give them a goodnight kiss without having to turn on the light that will awaken your kids. Below I am going to include some tips that may help you select the right night light for your kids.

1. Consider the theme of your respective child’s bedroom

If your child has a jungle theme you might want to opt for a night light that has got something related to the jungle or alternatively if your youngster has a sports theme then you definitely should go with a night light that targets one sport or possibly uses several different sports. Another popular theme, which is used, in kids bedrooms are often the plaids, stripes and/or polka dots themes, with one of these themes you’ll want to play up a lot of color contrasts, for example, pink/green, red/green, black/pink, blue/brown, and so on.

2. Take into account the gender of your infant

Pink and purple are fantastic color options for young girls and blue and green night lights tend to be a great color selection for young boys. For those who are with child and not aware of the sex of your baby, primary colors like bright red, yellow, and blue make wonderful unisex colors, in addition, just about any shade of green from lime green, apple green to a soft sage green should be considered. In the event a softer palette is desired, night lights with a buttery yellow, mint green, peach and lavender can be utilized.

3. Figure out if a light bulb happens to come already added

If perhaps it does not I propose getting a fluorescent light bulb mainly because not only does fluorescent light bulbs create higher-quality light, in addition, it has a longer bulb life expectancy and over time you will save extra money on your utility bill because fluorescent light bulbs don’t use as much electric power as standard light bulbs.

4. Ensure there is an on/off button

The primary reason that you might want an on/off switch is because, in the morning, it’s easier just to change the switch to off versus needing to disconnect the night light each and every time, not only will this be more convenient for you or your little child, but it will, as a result, prevent the chance of damage occurring caused by frequently unplugging it in and out of the light socket.

5. Remember to consider your child’s opinion

Children can provide you with some terrific insight into what they do and do not really like; it will not only be fun to your child to aid you when decorating, but it will also allow them to have a feeling of worth in the household, and it will make it possible for great bonding time that is invaluable. When choosing a night light with your kid make sure you explain to your kids exactly what a theme is and what colors complement that theme so that your whole decor within the room meshes nicely as one.
